What is Pastoral Women Alliance ?

Pastoral Women Alliance (Maldhari Mahila Sangathan) is a registered organization under the name of Pahel Foundation based in Gujarat, India.

The idea germinated after a Global Gathering of Women Pastoralist in 2010 in Gujarat, where 110 pastoralist women from 32 countries participated. Due to the growing demand from the pastoral women, it was increasingly being felt that pastoral women should be organised to address their issues. The idea later got conceptualized by Maldhari Rural Action Group- MARAG in 2014, an NGO based in India and working at regional level in South Asia. The alliance was formally registered as Pahel Foundation in 2019.

Pastoral Women Alliance emphasizes on leadership roles of women in securing their livelihoods through their traditional knowledge and skills. There is a lot of focus on women and food production systems which includes livestock keeping and agriculture.

As on 2020 there are more than ten regional pastoralist women groups with total membership of 3000 women from villages across Gujarat.
